I think Belna gave me her sinus infection over the internet, QQ. I've been all congested and exhausted this week, to the point where I asked for a half day today so I could go home, get a few things done, and then sleep really early. Some of the BPAL I bought arrived today, though, which filled me with joy and happiness - bottle of Thunder Moon (which I dabbed just a touch of on and have now been sniffing at for like the last hour) plus some imps off my wishlist.
Non-spoiler thoughts on the new Star Trek movie: it was amazing, and I will probably go see it again. Definitely has stuff for both fans and non-fans to love. Spoilery thoughts:
The great:
-I did not want to punch new!Kirk in the face! I guess it really is just Shatner.
-One of the better uses they've done in time travel in the series - it's an in-continuity reboot, which is actually pretty awesome - it means that they can make more movies without having to be tied down by the pre-existing canon
-Zachary Quinto managed to successfully convince me that he was not Sylar - I was afraid I was going to watch the movie and just see Sylar the whole time (which is extra bad because I couldn't stand that character)
-Chekov being awesome!
-Spock Prime. Total fanservice, and I loved every second of it. I've come to realize that while I may be sort of 'eh' on Nimoy's physical appearance (even in TOS), he has a 'I could listen to him read the phonebook' sort of voice. Mmmm.
-They did a great job updating the look of everything - I particularly liked the new uniforms.
The nitpicky:
-Chekov's hair. Kind of puzzling because they tried to match appearance to a certain extent with everyone else, but the two Chekovs look really different
-Voices. Unfixable-nitpicky, but see note above about Leonard Nimoy's voice. The same holds true for George Takei, so their new counterparts sound sort of soft-spoken in comparison.
The DO NOT WANT:
-Sulu's katana. Seriously guys, when he said 'fencing', it's pretty clear from TOS canon that he meant Western fencing. This man, deep down inside, wants to be one of the three musketeers. But nooo. The writers went 'He's asian! Katanas are badass!' and so it was. The sad thing is, it would have been even more badass if he killed a bunch of Romulans with a rapier, because everybody expects the katana at this point.
-Spock/Uhura. I understand that moviegoers expect a token romance in their action flick, and that it was a really heavyhanded way of showing us that Spock has feelings too, but it seems so out of character for both of them. They're both consummate professionals, and there really has to be regulations about cadets dating instructors who are also ranked officers. Uhura wouldn't want that to screw up her career chances, and neither would Spock. On top of that, the scene in the transporter room had me cringing. Vulcans + public affection = no no no no - holding hands would be a scandalously large amount of touching. Making out in front of like three other people would be inconceivable - and then it was played for laughs. I would have liked to see a friendship between the two of them, because that would have been more believable for the characters, and the message would have been there but somewhat more subtle.
-Kirk's promotion. This bugged Jon more than me, but I see his point. He got promoted from 'just graduating' to 'captain' in one go, and then got put in charge of the flag ship. That just kind of breaks suspension of disbelief at that point.
